Dr. Jack Barkin
Founding Partner & Medical Director, Urology Innovations Canada
Dr. Jack Barkin has been a pioneer in Canadian urology for over 42 years, recognized for advancing minimally invasive treatments and bringing innovative technologies into clinical practice. As the Medical Director at UIC, he led the introduction of HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) for prostate cancer in North America, performing the first treatment on March 12, 2006. Since then, he has trained more than 25 urologists in this technique.
A graduate of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Barkin has played a key role in shaping the field of urology both in Canada and internationally. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, was Principal Investigator on more than 200 clinical trials, and currently holds the title of Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto. A frequent speaker at global medical conferences, he is a sought-after educator who has trained physicians around the world in advanced surgical and diagnostic techniques. His clinical expertise spans a wide range of urologic conditions, including both benign and malignant prostate disease, overactive bladder, erectile dysfunction, male menopause, and bladder cancer.
Dr. Barkin was instrumental in introducing the UroLift system to Canada and establishing the country’s first Blue Light Cystoscopy program. He also played a key role in launching the Robotic Surgical Program and the Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) Program at Humber River Hospital, where he previously served as Chief of Urology, Chief of Surgery, and Chief of Staff.
He was one of the first Urologists in Ontario to perform outpatient MRI Fusion Transperineal Targeted Prostate Biopsies to detect prostate cancer.
As Chief Clinical Officer at MedTechSyndicates – a group led by physicians dedicated to identifying, investing in, and advancing new impactful medical technologies – Dr. Barkin reviews over 100 innovation proposals each year. This role reflects his ongoing quest to bring the most promising and effective new treatments in medicine, surgery or diagnostics to the forefront, helping to ensure that patients benefit from meaningful advancements in care.
